PARISH HISTORY

The following is a precis of the long and fascinating history of St Peter's and our parish;

1664

St Peter's House built for resident priest in Fleshmonger Street (now St Peter Street). A room in this house served as the chapel for the Catholics in Winchester and district.

1740

Makeshift chapel erected behind priest's house by Father James Shaw.

1792

Gothic Church erected by Dr. Milner, who in 1803 was consecrated a Bishop in this church.

1792

Refugee French priests came to Winchester, 165 of them accommodated in King's House (now the Barracks). See memorial tablet in the north porch of present parish church.

1794

Poor Clares set up girls' boarding school at Abbey House; left Winchester in 1808.

1795

Refugee Benedictine Nuns from Brussels came to Winchester and established a boarding and day school for girls in house (now Royal Hotel), in St Peter Street. The nuns brought some of the girls with them from Belgium including a girl paid for by her reputed father, the Duke of Wellington. They left the parish in 1857.

1800

St James' Cemetery purchased from St Cross Hospital. This cemetery dates from the 7th century, had became disused and in penal days became burial ground for Catholic recusants.

1853

Stables of White House, St Peter Street , converted into school for boys (later for boys and girls) by Father Ignatius Collingridge.

1899

School for boys and girls erected at Gordon Road by Canon Gunning.

1915

Canon Gunning acquired land and house, 29 Jewry Street .

1926

Church erected on Jewry Street site by Canon John Henry King, who was consecrated Bishop in this church in 1938. He died on 23rd March 1965 (then Archbishop King) and is buried at St James Cemetry in Winchester.

1954

Old church converted into parish hall and named Milner Hall.

1956

Modernisation and extensions to St Peter's School.

1957

Chapel of St Thomas More erected at Weeke.

1960

Bon Secours Sisters came to Crawley Court (in succession to the Carmelite nuns who had resided there for three previous years) and established nursing home. Closed in 1969.

1960

The Sisters of the Congregation of the Religious Teachers Filippini came to Winchester and opened nursery school in the White House.

1965

Site acquired for new church and school in Stanmore-Oliver's Battery area.

1966 Archbishop Delegate, Archbishop Cardinal, dedicated Martyrs windows in Lady Chapel as memorial to Archbishop King
,

1968

Church of St. Stephen built by Canon Mullarkey in Oliver's Battery Road .

1968

Building of St. Stephen 's Primary School commenced at Oliver's Battery.

1970

St Stephen's School partially completed - opened as annexe to St Peter's School.

1975

Extension to St Thomas More's Chapel, Weeke, and erection of Priest's house.

1981

Organ of St Peter's Church re-built and enlarged by Canon Llewhellin.

1985 School Infant Dept. left Gordon Road for Oliver's Battery .

1986

Consecration of new altar in re-ordered sanctuary at St Peter's. Project, under Canon France , also included creation of a parish centre, new presbytery and extensive landscaping.

1987

Restoration of the Milner Hall.

1988

Major renovations to the structure of the White House, St Peter's Convent.

1989

Commencement of the building of the new St Peter's Primary School in Oliver's Battery.

1990

Opening of the Infant department and administration block at St Peter's School.

1992

Bi-centenary of the Opening and Consecration of Milner's Chapel.

1996

Building of Phase 11 of St Peter's School in Oliver's Battery .

1998

Old Presbytery on Jewry Street , renovated and converted into flats and offices.

1999

Parish Millennium Christmas Eve Mass celebrated by Bishop Crispian Hollis in Zippo's Circus Tent.

2002

New Link between St. Stephen's Church and St. Peter's School built.

2002

New Millennium Narthex opened in St. Peter's Church.

2003 150th Anniversary of St Peter's Primary School.
   

2005

Monsignor Peter Doyle, Parish Priest concecrated Bishop of Northampton
